New Research: Antibacterial Mechanism in Kratom?

A research article was released in October of 2021 by Hotimah Salim from the Department of Biochemistry Medicine and Bimolecular Science (Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya) in Indonesia. The data revealed some remarkable findings surrounding Mitragyna Speciosa, also known as Kratom. Indonesia is in the middle of thoroughly researching their native tree since the recent legalization in Thailand. It has sparked even more curiosity in that region, along with the realization that there is not much research out there.

Introduction

A research article was released in October of 2021 by Hotimah Salim from the Department of Biochemistry Medicine and Bimolecular Science (Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya) in Indonesia. The data revealed some remarkable findings surrounding Mitragyna Speciosa, also known as Kratom. Indonesia is in the middle of thoroughly researching their native tree since the recent legalization in Thailand. It has sparked even more curiosity in that region, along with the realization that there is not much research out there.

Kratom has many pharmacological effects, but this research uncovered an additional one that has not been proven until now. They found kratom is also effective in inhibiting the growth of E. coli and S. pneumonia significantly. Antibacterial activity tests were carried out at concentrations of 0.78%, 1.56%, 3.125%, 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50% and 100%. Insilico was used to search for secondary metabolites and metabolite interactions in Mytragina speciosa.

  • Antibacterial

This study shows that kratom is expected to have an effect on the bacteria that causes respiratory and digestive tract infections. This might be the reason for the recent “rumor” that kratom helps the covid 19 symptoms that many had claimed.

Conclusion

This recent study only helps the community’s cause by providing further proof that kratom is a medicinal plant with more positive benefits than negative. Any substance can be abused, especially in high, regular doses. This doesn’t separate the fact that it’s benefits far outweigh the uncommon side effects that one might have if consuming. Side effects are a common reaction we all typically deal with and accept for certain items we choose to consume. Everything in moderation applies, especially with kratom.
